The third game in the Civil Servants Cup saw the Army against the GB Students at Aldershot Military Stadium on a Wednesday afternoon kick-off at 1400hrs on 13 May 09.The Army backline with the exception of the No7 had played 2 games or less, Carl Saville at 9 was on debut.  As expected the Students, preparing a touring squad, came out strong with a big mobile pack and dominated the first 25 mins.  The students scored 4 tries out wide converting one.  The Army with their 1st bit of reasonable possession completed a set to go up field for Captain and Prop Gareth Lodge to crash over to score by the sticks.  30 mins for the Army to find their feet, finishing the last 10 of the 1st half strong, but was it too late?2nd half started with the Army attacking relentlessly and with the exception of some 5 or so sets from the Students was camped in the opposition half for the rest of the game.  No tries scored by the Army, 2 more by the Students breaking out doesn’t tell the story.  The referee unbelievably disallowed a try for Rob Martin who bounced off his stomach having grounded the ball, 3 others were not given, all fair calls.  The Students were rightly proud of their defensive effort which secured this hard fought victory. On reflection positives for the Army; a lot of young lads finding their feet in the backline, good experience for them.  Carl Saville was outstanding on debut.  The experienced players Gareth Lodge, Dave Goddard, Ben Taylor and Lee Innes stood out showing they know what is required, we can all learn from them. The Army miss out on the final by point’s difference which will be played between GB Students v GB Police at a date TBC.

Coach’s Comment:  Rich Naivalurua said that we couldn’t afford to keep starting matches so poorly in crucial games.  Hopefully these players will learn from that and a couple of the younger guys will come through on the tour.  Our experienced players showed the way.
